Indeed, despite its similarities to Tolkien's famous Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Dark Tide is in many ways its own entity. The Warrows are much more aggressive than hobbits and are keen-eyed archers. McKiernan makes an effort to differentiate his Warrows from Tolkien's hobbits and the kender of the Dragonlance novels (both of which he references in the "Foreword Anew" of the 2000 Roc omnibus edition of the trilogy, The Iron Tower, so at least he acknowledges his debts) and does so successfully, in my opinion. It is filled with standard fantasy elements-a long-dormant evil power in the north awakens to threaten and overwhelm the good and free peoples in the south-and is somewhat derivative of Tolkien-small humanoids called Warrows in place of hobbits, one of whom is named Tuckerby Underbank, an obvious play on Frodo Baggins' famous alias of Underhill-but is still a fun read for all that. ![]() The Dark Tide, the first book in Dennis L McKiernan's Iron Tower trilogy is a diverting and entertaining novel. ![]() ![]() ![]() Marko Bukur, medical director of trauma at New York’s Bellevue Hospital and himself an avid cyclist. “I honestly believe that we probably are only seeing the tip of the iceberg,” says Dr. Though the record-keeping on severe e-bike injuries is spotty, both anecdotal evidence and emergency, trauma, and orthopedic department interviews suggest that we’re on the front edge of a new order of danger on both bike paths and roadways. Increasingly, some trauma specialists say that is precisely what they’re seeing. They really were going fast enough that something far worse could have occurred. The lead cyclist was on an electric bike, with the trailing cyclist hanging on to it with one hand and steering his bike with the other. ![]() The boys were blasting through the intersection at a speed neither of them likely would ever reach on a conventional bicycle. “I never saw them because they were going so fast.” “Honestly, I was going fast enough and they were going fast enough that it could have been fatal,” she told me. So too in life, as she riposted to her daughter's new-found success as an author: "Jeanette, why be happy when you could be normal?" Regardless I failed to review them even on the second viewing of the series for the blog, and for that I should be told off and denied any of Joan’s lovely cakes and biscuits (that’s ok, cause I’m on a diet!) Anyway, I think we should start. I mean, the 1970’s Famous Five skipped Five on a Treasure Island all together and used Five on Kirrin Island Again as their first episode (something to do with the copyrights still being tied up with the Children’s Film Foundation who shot the black and white cinematic episodes in the 50s). I did give it a go, however it never really got off the ground because doing the first episode was far too complicated. Right so, a long time ago at the beginning of time (for this blog) I had this crazy notion that I was going to compare these TV series like for like and side by side. ![]() ![]() ![]() At first, in the beginning, I was wondering what made this stand out, but as we got into the nitty gritty experiences as an undocumented Chinese-American immigrant family, I slowly began to understand what made this memoir in particular special. Wow, I’ve said a lot already! Let’s dive into this review.įirst of all: wow, what a powerful memoir. It’s so refined, the mark of someone who was born to be a writer and has cultivated their craft. The author is a lawyer by trade, but is a fellow bookworm, which shows in her prose. And, to be honest, I’m glad that I came in blind because it allowed me to have my socks blown out of the water. I should’ve read the premise or book blurb, or even the reviews about it on The New York Times, but I went in completely blind. I will also admit, I knew nothing about the premise of this memoir going in, and had originally assumed that it was going to be just another immigrant memoir. So I borrowed the audiobook, and man did I devour this book. That was insane to me, especially because it had just come out and most of the time when things come out, there’s a months long waiting list just to get a copy of it. I first read about it on The New York Times, but what compelled me to actually get to it was the fact that I saw it on Libby ready to be borrowed right here. I’ve heard so much about this book, and it literally just came out. ![]() ![]() ![]() Smithers was a brilliant but shady character who operated on the fringes of the rare book trade, issuing small, clandestine editions of risqué books with the boast: 'I will publish the things the others are afraid to touch'. ![]() ![]() Thereafter, almost the only publisher who would use his drawings was Leonard Smithers. Aubrey Beardsley's distinctive black and white drawings for Oscar Wilde's Salomé, published in 1894, brought him an extraordinary notoriety whilst still in his early twenties. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Jonah Jameson will do whatever it takes to make the world see that Spider-Man is nothing but a threat and a menace.
